...Shohei Ohtani, the four-time MVP and Los Angeles Dodgers superstar, will once again represent Samurai Japan at the 2026 World Baseball Classic, returning to the international stage after helping Japan capture the 2023 title with one of the most iconic moments in WBC history. Ohtani’s global appeal and two-way prowess have helped raise the profile of the tournament worldwide, drawing major media attention and even influencing streaming partnerships in markets like Japan that aim to showcase his presence and Japan’s title defense.
However, unlike his two-way role in past Classics, Ohtani will not pitch in the 2026 WBC, choosing (at least for this tournament) to contribute solely as a designated hitter in order to prioritize health and prepare for a full MLB season ahead; this decision was made by Ohtani himself and not imposed by his team, and it still leaves him as a central offensive threat for Japan as they aim to defend their championship.
