Tucking into a classic British Sunday lunch at a pub in Wales has left dozens of diners with food poisoning.

The Corner House Inn in Llangynwyd, Wales, temporarily shut its doors last week after Public Health Wales linked customers’ illnesses to meals served there.

While environmental health officers investigated the pub’s premises, the staff did a thorough deep clean and sanitisation.

Siobhan Adams, Consultant in Health Protection at Public Health Wales, said: ‘Public Health Wales, working with Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board and Environmental Health Officers from Shared Regulatory Services, is concluding its investigation into reports of illness following customers eating Sunday lunch at the Corner House Inn in Llangynwyd, Maesteg.

‘We have received 43 reports of illness in people who ate food prepared at the premises.

‘We can confirm that Clostridium perfringens has been identified as the cause of this illness.

What is Clostridium perfringens?

Clostridium perfringens is a bacteria widespread in animals and the environment.

These bacteria can develop spores which can survive cooking and grow during slow cooling and unrefrigerated storage.

The spores can make you ill.

Outbreaks of Clostridium perfringens food poisoning tend to happen in settings where large groups of people and/or food are being served.

It also tends to happen in places where keeping food at safe temperatures may be difficult.

This type of bacterial food poisoning can also occur when batch cooking at home where you may leave food out to cool longer than intended.

Young children, pregnant women, people with an underlying health condition and older people are most likely to suffer severe symptoms.

Symptoms of this type of food poisoning include stomach cramps and watery diarrhea.

‘The risk to the public is low, and we do not expect to see further cases associated with this incident.

‘We would like to thank the business for the constructive and proactive way they have engaged with our investigation.’

An update shared on the pub’s Facebook page wrote: ‘As you are aware we contacted environmental health ourselves to come out after people had become ill after coming to our restaurant, we have said that we will be honest throughout and will continue to do so.

‘We are still working with them to ensure the safety of our customers and staff.’

After being closed for a short period of time, the restaurant has since reopened.

Some customers took to Facebook to share their experience with the food, after the food poisoning news broke out.

One customer wrote: ‘I definitely think it’s food related as all my party that ate here Sunday have been ill but it’s not passed on to any other people that any of us live with since home.

‘We often eat here and the food was delicious on Sunday and we will be back – these things happen unfortunately.’

Another commented: ‘My daughter brought a doggy bag home for my dog and he was ill also.’

One regular customer commented: ‘I’ve been ill all day also. Dinner was gorgeous, as usual though.

‘Never had any issues prior to yesterday so it seems highly unlikely that this was a result of anything to do with hygiene etc.

‘We were a party of four, all ate the same thing and I’m the only one to have become unwell. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed the food.

‘The only things I had that the other three didn’t were a Pepsi max and mint sauce.’

Many people have took to the pub’s Facebook page to share their positive experiences in light of the news.

One customer, who does not believe it was caused by staff actions, commented: ‘Sorry to hear this. Often there for the fantastic Sunday dinner and have never had an issue.

‘Hope all affected are ok but I highly doubt this is due to Corner House practices / hygiene; fair play to Wayne/Gill for self reporting and going through root cause analysis process with environmental health.’

Another commented: ‘Total respect for you both for being such responsible owners.

‘You run a first class business and for your sakes I hope you get the answers you deserve soon. No hesitation in eating with you soon.’
